The UFI Code – Unique Product Identification for Poison Information Centres

The UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) is a mandatory labeling element for certain hazardous mixtures, enabling the clear assignment of a product to its notified formulation in case of emergency – especially during inquiries to national poison information centres.

The code consists of 16 alphanumeric characters, grouped into four blocks separated by hyphens. It must be preceded by the prefix “UFI” (e.g. UFI: E600-30P1-S00Y-5079).

The UFI code must be placed close to the other identification elements. If no identification label is required, the UFI must be indicated in section 1.1 of the safety data sheet. For all other products, a voluntary indication in section 1.1 of the safety data sheet is recommended.

Labeling and Placement

The UFI must be placed near the other labeling elements on the product label. If no label is required for the product, the UFI must be listed in Section 1.1 of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). For all other products, inclusion in the SDS is also recommended – even voluntarily.

Formulation-Specific and Unique

All products bearing the same UFI must have identical formulations. If the composition changes, a new UFI is required. Conversely, it is possible to assign multiple UFI codes to a single formulation – for example, to differentiate between markets or customers. If a formulation is sourced from an upstream supplier and remains unchanged, their UFI can be reused. It should be noted that this allows the supplier to be traced.

Generating the UFI

The UFI is generated using the ECHA’s UFI Generator. It is based on the VAT number of the notifying company and a unique internal formulation number.

Our Support

Our compliance managers you in generating and integrating the UFI code – whether by coordinating with upstream suppliers or by generating the code ourselves. We ensure that the UFI is correctly assigned, documented, and integrated into the product – legally compliant, traceable, and auditable.
