Ensuring Compliance and Marketability
Labelling products and their packaging is a complex task that must take into account a wide range of legal requirements. Depending on the product type, different regulations apply – such as the CE Directives with their harmonised standards, the provisions of WEEE and RoHS for electrical devices, or the requirements of packaging legislation. For chemical products, additional obligations apply, including those from the CLP Regulation (GHS) and sector-specific laws such as those for biocides or cleaning agents.
Key aspects include determining the required scope of mandatory information, its placement on the packaging, and minimum font sizes. All levels of packaging – from primary to transport packaging – must be properly labelled. Depending on the product type, tactile hazard warnings or a child-resistant closure may also be legally required. In many cases, further information must be included, such as the CE mark, UFI code, recycling or disposal instructions. In e-commerce, additional rules apply for making product-related information available online.
Particularly in international supply chains, with multifunctional products or multilingual labels, numerous detailed questions arise. Possible labelling exemptions must also be carefully assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Our consulting services help ensure that your product labelling is both legally compliant and practical. We review labels and packaging components before production begins and help you avoid common errors – before market surveillance authorities identify them.
