CE Marking for Electrical Devices – Stay Compliant

Electrical devices are subject to various European directives depending on their design and function. These include, among others.

  • the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU),
  • the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2014/30/EU),
  • the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU),
  • the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU), and

the Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC). These directives require manufacturers and distributors to carry out the CE conformity assessment procedure and to affix the CE mark. Without a completed procedure, electrical devices may not be placed on the EU market. The responsibility for CE marking lies with the manufacturer.

Risk Assessment – A Key Element

Manufacturers and importers are responsible for the safety of their products. A core component of CE compliance is the risk assessment.

All potential risks posed by a product must be taken into account - such as hazardous sub-stances, mechanical hazards or electrical risks. The use of harmonised standards is strongly recommended. If these standards are complied with, conformity with the legal requirements can be assumed.

Conformity Assessment – Step by Step

The conformity assessment is typically carried out via the internal production control procedure according to Annex II Module A of Decision No. 768/2008/EC. This includes:

  • Technical documentation: including device description, drawings, risk assessment, list of applied standards, and test reports
  • Production monitoring: ensuring compliance with the relevant standards
  • CE marking and safety instructions: correct placement on the product and packaging
  • Declaration of conformity: drafting and archiving the formal EU Declaration of Conformity
